Simple and effective: the centre of this tool holds a permanent magnet that orients itself towards your magnetic field to show you whether the polarity is North or South.

The magnetic fields oppose each other and rotate the system so that the field lines align. You therefore obtain the direction and polarity of the magnetic field of your magnetic source.

It can be used to determine the polarity of a permanent magnet, and also to determine the direction of rotation of DC actuators.

  • Pole detection on a permanent magnet
  • Pole detection on a DC electromagnet
  • Polarity check after magnetising a ferrite, neodymium or other magnet
  • Testing during coil manufacture or maintenance
  • Checking for multiple alternating poles
  • Checking the magnetisation of magnetic clamps
  • This manual tool cannot quantify flux density. This identifier can check for the presence of a magnetic field of 50 Gauss or more, indicating South or North polarity. Want to measure the flux density of a magnetic field while also knowing whether the polarity is North or South? Then discover our range of gaussmeters.
